SEVERE (Say it, suh-VEER): Intense, forceful. 
A big earthquake hit Los Angeles on Monday. It caused many deaths. There were fires, water-main breaks and power failures. Highways were wrecked and buildings knocked down. 
An earthquake is a great underground movement of the earth. The Los Angeles quake registered 6.6 on the Richter (say it RIK-ter) scale. 
The Richter scale measures how much the ground moves during an earthquake. 
A 6.6 measurement is very severe. The earthquake in the San Francisco area on October 17, 1989, was 7.1. That quake happened just before the start of the third game of the World Series.
