As temperatures plummet, chances of getting frostbite increase. Frostbite affects only living tissue; it occurs as the fluid between body cells freezes and the cells become dehydrated. Symptoms start with feelings of extreme cold, burning sensations, and then numbing. Years ago, the suggested treatment was to rub the frostbitten area with snow or ice _ DON'T DO IT! This damages the frozen tissue. Instead, the area should be warmed quickly in warm _ not hot _ water or by another warm part of the body. Frostbite risk is greatest when the windchill reaches 25 below or colder.
