Jun. 18--RUMSEY -- Being called a carpetbagger didn't sting too much, nor did losing to a seven-term incumbent. It was voter apathy that left the bitterest taste in the mouth of former Rep. Paul N. "Pete" McCloskey, who failed to unseat Tracy Rep. Richard Pombo in the June 6 election. "I saw apathy, disinterest, cynicism," McCloskey said. "It's scary, really." The 78-year-old McCloskey has returned to his citrus and olive farm in this remote corner of Yolo County to reflect on his defeat.
