Article: Frank Stella at the Sackler Museum, Harvard University.

In "Frank Stella 1958," curators Harry Cooper and Megan R. Luke examine the paintings and assemblages Frank Stella produced in the months after he graduated from Princeton in 1958. Having selected 20 little-known works from that period, the curators attempt to demonstrate how Stella arrived so quickly--by late 1958 and early 1959--at his first cohesive series, the "Black Paintings." This exhibition shows us a young artist testing out a variety of images, compositions, materials, textures and modes of paint handling as he arrives at the parameters that will govern his landmark, proto-Minimalist paintings.
