It's been three years since United States troops invaded Iraq. What first seemed a desert blitzkrieg has become a prolonged presence. American casualties continue, now topping 2,300. Dwarfing them are Iraqi violent deaths, incessant reminders that sectarian differences cannot currently be resolved through peaceful means.
Once persistently upbeat about Iraq's future, President George W. Bush now has a more nuanced and reflective tone. Asked at the March 21 press conference, "Will there come a day ... when there will be no more American forces in Iraq," Bush replied, "... that will be decided by future presidents."
