Jun. 18--More than half of Tyler area companies that responded to a Tyler Economic Development Council survey said they plan to expand production and increase employment over the next couple of years.
But a majority of companies surveyed also said their workforce lacked basic skills.
In November 2005 the TEDC mailed the survey to 144 manufacturers, distributors and processors in Smith County. Sixty-eight were completed and returned by February 2006, for a 47.2 percent return rate.
The TEDC pledged to only use the survey results in aggregate form and keep the identities of the responding companies confidential.
