She ascended the second highest office in the land exactly a year ago, quite aware that it was a highly pressured, closely scrutinised, highly contested, controversial, male-dominated and at times a most depressing job.
While everyone hails the 50-year-old Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka as one of the few affable and unassuming politicians around, this, at times, is drowned out by the contentious politics of her office, her party and her family.
She tried, shortly after she was appointed, to assuage the pro-Zuma camp by meeting Cosatu and the ANC Youth League, a charm offensive that seemed not to have succeeded politically.
