Sixteenth-century England, for a patriarchal age, was well-endowed with queens. Mary Tudor is not usually regarded as one of the most successful. The second edition of David Loades' The Reign of Mary Tudor (Longman, [pounds] 12.99) is a shorter, tighter account than the original, without losing any of the objective sensitivity with which he examines the individual in the context of the religious and political forces which acted on her reign. He brings us back to the question of how far the Reformation had progressed by the mid-century, how real was ordinary people's protestantism and how real the Catholicism which Mary reimposed.
