Suzanne Butorovich, a 16-year-old high school student from Campbell, Calif., wrote to Thomas Merton on June 15, 1967, asking him for a contribution to her school's "underground" newspaper, the Clique Courier, offering to "educate" him in pop music and telling him generally about her life and concerns. She signed herself "The Nut" or "Disaster" and, taking her cue from Merton, occasionally addressed him as the "Hippie Hermit." This exchange became Merton's fullest one with a young person and it lasted until just before he left for Asia in 1968.
