SAN FRANCISCO -- Patients with all stages of CKD have an increased risk of vascular calcification, not just those at advanced stages, according to investigators who presented their findings here at the Annual Dialysis Conference.
"Vascular calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease has been detected in both the coronary and non-coronary circulations," said Robert Toto, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "In selected dialysis populations the prevalence seems to range from between 50% and 80%.... But it's also common in chronic kidney disease in patients not on dialysis."
