A Capsule History

The story of St. Kitts and Nevis began long before European discovery. The islands' first settlers were the Carib Indians, a fierce people known for their cannibalism. These first residents called St. Kitts Liamuiga, or "fertile land." (Today you'll still hear that name--it graces the island's volcano.) It wasn't until 1493, on his second voyage to the New World, that Christopher Columbus spotted the islands. The larger island he first named San Jorge and then renamed St. Christopher for the patron saint of travelers, a name it retains today (St. Kitts is a nickname given to the isle by the British).
