US Highway 395 now takes you northwest for about 75 miles, where it merges with US 50 three miles south of Carson City. Two blocks north of the State Museum and a block north of Washington Street at East Williams Street, 50 diverges from 395 and continues east to Virginia City or west to South Lake Tahoe.

Carson City is Nevada's state capital. The city was named after the famous scout, Kit Carson, who explored much of this area. The city's Chamber of Commerce, at 1900 Carson Street, has a free self-guided tour map that illustrates and describes the city's historic sites.
