Lake Tahoe, one of the true gems of the Sierra Nevada, is only an hour and a quarter drive from Virginia City, 45 miles away. Take Highway 50 back to Carson City and proceed on to Lake Tahoe. It is a marvelously scenic route that is most enjoyable.
Tahoe History
The Washoe Indians, who were hunters, gatherers and fishermen, probably discovered the lake. They lived in the Tahoe basin for thousands of years. The lake was a critical source of food as well as a sacred site.
