The completion of Hoover Dam resulted in the creation of Lake Mead and Lake Mojave in the 1930s. Lake Mead National Recreation Area suddenly existed in what had previously been a large area of mostly barren desert surrounding the Colorado River, with its intermittent flooding and dry periods. Although the primary purpose behind establishment of the recreation area was to provide watersports enthusiasts with myriad opportunities for recreation, the area contains enough beautiful scenery to merit inclusion in this guide.
