Recently the front page of the New York Times reported that Nevaeh (that's "heaven" spelled backward) had made the fastest climb in popularity of any name in the U.S. during the past century. It's an interesting statistic made all the more so when looked at in relation to another, albeit more local, development--the sudden popularity of Buddha evocations among New York City's restaurants. Are these trends further evidence of our collective need for something reassuring in worrisome times, or, in the case of the city's latest dining fad, are restaurateurs simply looking for an easy way to endow their establishments with an air of enlightenment?
