Villa Gesell owes its existence to the doggedness of a German immigrant who from 1931 onwards planted thousands of pine and eucalyptus trees in the area to stabilize the shifting sand dunes. After many setbacks he succeeded, and Villa Gesell is now a very popular beach resort. The dunes to the north and south have partially given way to pine forests now, and there are some camping facilities. The sandy beach extends for 62 km.
