San Juan covers an area of 96 000 square km (37 056 square miles) and has a population of approximately 530 000. It shares borders with La Rioja Province in the north and east, San Luis Province in the east, and Mendoza in the south, and the spine of the Andes forms the border with Chile.
The centers of traditional artesanias (weaving, potting, and so on) are in the Andean region--such as San Jose de Jachal, Iglesia, and San Agustin de Valle Fertil in the east.
The provincial capital is San Juan, located some 1130 km north-west of Buenos Aires.
