Federacion began as a natural outgrowth of the town of Mandisovi which was founded in 1810 by General Belgrano. It was founded as a city in its ownright in 1847. Located on the shores of Embalse Salto Grande, the lake created by the hydroelectric scheme at Salto Grande, the modern town was designed by Don Manuel Urdinarrain. The mainspring of the town's economy is timber and tourism. It is ideally situated for water sports, and there are several boat ramps along the shores of the lake.
