Founded in 1835, La Paz is situated on a sandy bluff, right on the banks of the Rio Parana.
In 1842 the naval Battle of Costa Brava was fought here between Uruguay, under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Argentina, under thecommandof Admiral William Brown. When the battle began to fare badly for Garibaldi he burned his ships, slipped across the Rio Espinillo by boat, and returned to Uruguay via Corrientes Province. The main plank of Garibaldi's ship has been preserved in the Museo Regional.
