The county takes its name from the Norse Weissefiord, meaning "the ford of the flats" and when the Normans invaded Ireland in 1169 they landed here. Like its neighbor Waterford, Wexford has a varied and attractive landscape with mountains and a coastline, lots of pretty villages and historic sites. Its main rivers are the Slaney and Barrow and it's the home of the busy ferry port of Rosslare, serving the UK and Europe.
It's the best area in the country for bird-watching, with a wildfowl reserve and off-shore bird sanctuary. Its coastline and varied terrain offers plenty of activities, including hill walking, coastal walks, mountain biking and hang-gliding.
