There are encouraging signs that 1994 might be the year the United States turns away from its obsession with the death penalty. Americans should now give capital punishment as big a rebuff as the Brady bill gave the National Rifle Association.
U.S. Catholic bishops are expected to issue a statement in November 1994 that will strongly reaffirm a pro-life position with special emphasis on the wrongness of the death penalty.
