After Texas earned its independence from Mexico, it was portrayed as the utopia of the New World to Germans, who were eager to find prosperity while their own country faltered through a depression. Several princes and nobles formed a "Mainzer Adelsverein," or League of Nobles, to sponsor Germans who wanted to emigrate to Texas.

Prince Carl von Solms-Braunfels and 200 others striking out for a better life, arrived in present-day New Braunfels on Good Friday, 1845.
