Kerrville.(Central Texas)

* History

Cypress trees that lined the Guadalupe River first attracted Joshua Brown to Kerrville in the early 1840s. Brown, a shinglemaker, was driven away by Indians, but returned in 1848 to resettle the town, then called Brownsborough. The town's name changed to Kerrsville and eventually the "s" was dropped.

Charles Schreiner, a Frenchman from Alsace-Lorraine who served as a Texas Ranger and Confederate soldier, became the area's prominent businessman. At one point he owned more than 600,000 acres of land. His legacy is two-fold: Schreiner College and Kerrville's status as mohair capital of the world, a "crop" that he introduced to the area.
