There have been more notorious people than you can shake a stick at come through Huntsville at one time or another--not to be expected in a town of 33,000 until you consider that it has been home to the Texas State Penitentiary ("The Walls") since 1847. Ruffians and criminals have been emprisoned in Huntsville for well over a century, some of them less lucky than others. "Old Sparky" electrocuted 361 inmates between 1924 and 1964. In early 1998 Karla Faye Tucker, a convicted pickax murderer, was executed here, causing a sensation around the world.
