Conroe is really about Lake Conroe, a jewel of a lake that serves as the recreational refuge of Houston, 40 miles south, and has become a retirement hamlet. Isaac Conroe, who lent his name to the town, operated a lumber mill on the edge of the Big Thicket. He constructed a small tram to connect with the International and Great Northern Railroad. The junction of the two became "Conroe's Switch." Several other railroads decided to lay track through the switch and the small town became a shipping hub.
Conroe went on to enjoy a small oil boom in the 1930s. Though local wells still produce, the boom days have long since passed. Today the laid-back ...
