My mother is prettier than I am, and the two men on the other side of the swimming pool are looking at her.
"Charlie was always a good dancer," she says, talking about her husband. "When I was married to your father we used to see Charlie and his wife at parties. Charlie was a big man and yet a graceful dancer. He still is. I loved your father dearly, but he was a godawful dancer."
She is wearing dark sunglasses, so I can't tell if she sees the men watching her. We are stretched out in lounge chairs, side by side, with a little table holding our glasses of ice between us.
