The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, who worked with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight against segregation, said he will retire from the ministry but will not stop fighting racial injustice.
Having had a non-cancerous brain tumor successfully removed in August prompted him to decide to retire earlier than planned.
"I'm retiring from the church. I'm recuperating. I'm feeling pretty good," Shuttlesworth told Jet. "You know when you have a brain operation, you [go about] a subtle way of doing things ... I won't take as many engagements as I have had ... It's about time for me to slow up a little bit," he reflected.
