Jun. 30--They are the boys and girls of summer -- the only ones in the nation to play prep baseball and softball when the school year is out of session.
A seven-part series, "Diamond Solitiare," by the Courier sports staff focused on Iowa's unique summer status of baseball and softball among 47 states that offer the sports, and the possibility that it has hurt the ability of the players to take their games to the next level -- professional baseball or earning scholarships.
