Roger Steckler, of Manhattan, wasn't looking to sell his collection of sports memorabilia last year--or ever. He collected the pins and buttons for love, not money. The ad executive, who bought his first car at 19 with proceeds from the sale of his coin collection, had been collecting the sports buttons since 1973, when other collectors were still scavenging century-old antiques. "Friends knew I would never sell," says Steckler. "Why even talk about it?"
