For a brief moment during May, South Africa was the envy of all those intrigued, obsessed and mesmerised by the phenomenon of unidentified flying objects.

Unfortunately it soon became clear that whatever disappeared into the sea near Port Shepstone on May 20 was not a crashing UFO, but a waterspout which was part of a small tornado.

Okay, so it wasn't the real thing, and crop circles are still found only in the northern hemisphere. The most famous incident in UFO lore was the reported crash of a UFO near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. But that doesn't mean South Africa doesn't have its fair share of UFOs. Quite the ...
