Jul. 3--It took Ned Hurley five years to get a ferry license, and only three years to give it up. Today, his 6-acre Bay Shore property is once again a parking lot and marina; the large boat moored there belongs to his competitor, Fire Island Ferries Inc., which has regained its monopoly on transporting passengers between Bay Shore and Fire Island.
