That American school children and adults know little about their world has been well documented. A high school junior thought that Alaska and Hawaii were islands floating off the coast of California, because "maps of the United States place them there in their own little box." Many students in a senior high school believed that Chernobyl was movie star Cher's first name. A grocery clerk asked a teacher bound for New Zealand, "What language do they speak up there?" In a nationally administered survey on global understanding conducted by the Educational Testing Service, the average college senior answered about 50 percent of the questions on world affairs correctly.
