NEW YORK -- Between harsh winter storms and the earthquake in Los Angeles, it was a rough January for retailers across the country. However, some men's wear merchants showed gains.
There was comfort in the knowledge that January tends to be one of the slowest months, and also in the hope that pent-up demand will mean improved February sales.
The Men's Wearhouse knocked out a 24.6 percent same-store sales gain, and total sales jumped 44.7 percent to $27.2 million.
Spiegel's Eddie Bauer division registered a 16 percent same-stores sales gain. Total sales at Spiegel rose 20 percent to $171.2 million, despite the adverse conditions.
