Ringtones are the latest music-industry cash machine, with cellphone users everywhere paying good money for brief song snippets that proclaim their fandom to all, every time they receive a phone call. Most ringtone purchases seem to involve R&B and hip-hop tunes, judging by a newish Billboard "Hot Ringtones" chart that measures such things. But the prospect of having my phone chirp out "Alex Chilton" whenever my dad calls ...
