Jul. 6--It took Orlando Hernandez seven pitches to find the strike zone last night against the Pirates, and once he did, the sizable crowd of 40,360 at Shea thanked him with a loud, sarcastic cheer. By the end of his seven scoreless innings, the fans owed El Duque an apology. While Hernandez was busy whiffing the free-swinging Pirates, his teammates were unable to scare up a hit after the first inning, never mind a run. Fortunately, the Mets scored all they would need in that opening conga line to the plate, and Hernandez teamed with the bullpen to make it stand up in a 5-0 victory over the Pirates.
