Francis Chichester was a remarkable man, a pioneer aviator as well as a yachtsman who overcame cancer to challenge the oceans of the world. His 1966-67 voyage in the 54-foot ketch Gipsy Moth IV achieved the first true solo circumnavigation (where the track passes over two points antipodean to each other) via the three capes of Good Hope, Leewin and Horn, making only one stop-Sydney. He arrived in Sydney in December 1996 and stayed six weeks, welcomed and assisted by members of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron.
