SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Facing his priests, San Francisco Archbishop John R. Quinn appeared tense and sometimes puzzled as he read a prepared statement. "Why now?" he asked. "This is very divisive, very harmful to the archdiocese."

Quinn was speaking at a special meeting he called to respond to a petition signed by 41 of San Francisco's 125 priests who were asking that a dozen city parishes, set to close this summer, remain open for at least two more years.
