Jul. 9--When Nicholas Taubman assumed the post of U.S. ambassador to Romania late last year, he was almost immediately confronted with about 400 refugees from Uzbekistan.
The refugees had fled their country in May 2005 after demonstrations in the Uzbek city of Andijan ended in bloodshed. After the United Nations evacuated them to Romania, Taubman and others set about trying to find permanent homes for them.
"I think about 60 percent of them came to the U.S.," Taubman recalled. Others went to the Netherlands or the United Kingdom.
