It was a late December afternoon, a bit too hot and clearly too dry. There was plenty of sign, but we hadn't seen many deer. Still, the shadows were getting long and the air was starting to cool. We were into the witching hour, set up in some shade on a long, grassy ridge, one of few waterholes behind us, another big ridge sweeping up before us. We'd seen a couple of small bucks earlier, and right on the crest I'd seen six does feeding together; an unusual number of Coues whitetails to see in one spot.

The old man was up to our right, glassing a shaded pocket where the two ridges came together. He came back to us grinning. "Macho," he said flatly, "Grande."
