Japanese sales of the Nintendo DS handheld games console since January have reached 1.12m, according to video game magazine Famitsu. The new model DS Lite contributed 157,000 units in the two weeks following its launch. Supplies of DS Lite have been sporadic with patchy availability but Nintendo promised a further 450,000 units before end March. Many customers were turned away as demand comprehensively outstripped supply. Despite Sony's rival PSP handheld device selling 540,000 units in 2006 to date, DS has outsold PSP by two to one in Japan in that period.
