CANBERRA, July 13 Asia Pulse - Foreign ownership laws covering the nation's media will be ditched and large mergers allowed under a revamp of media laws outlined by the federal government today.

Communications Minister Helen Coonan announced the eagerly awaited shake-up of the nation's media landscape that will also pave the way for pay television operators to grab and show prominent sporting events.

Senator Coonan said consumers stood to benefit most from the overhaul.
