THE NAME LA SCALA RESONATES DEEPLY IN THE OPERA world, conjuring up images of over-the-top artistic glory, fiercely engaged audiences and murky backstage intrigue. Milan's famous opera house has quite a reputation to live up to--and, of late, it's been doing a pretty good job of it, especially in the "murky backstage intrigue" department.
