Jul. 14--As it works to grow a biotechnology industry, Rhode Island put another check in the win column yesterday after Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced its purchase of an idle drug manufacturing plant in Smithfield.
Connecticut-based Alexion, a drug development company, bought Dow Chemical's former plant to produce Soliris, a drug for treating a rare genetic blood disorder. Alexion plans to have at least 80 employees staffing the facility.
The company did not release the plant's sale price.
