Every time I hear the name of Paul Kruger or the apartheid homeland Ciskei, I get angry.
My sister and I were born at a hospital named after Kruger in Rustenburg, an area designated to the Tswana by the apartheid regime.
When our Tswana mother and Xhosa father married a month after I was born, the authorities gave the two of us a new place of birth: Ciskei.
Mantsha Khunou and James Ndaba's love knew no boundaries, but the government had clearly drawn theirs: all Xhosas had to come from Ciskei or Transkei.
At Kruger Hospital, special medical attention was given to people bearing Tswana surnames, while Xhosas were treated as foreigners. ...
