Breast cancer is one of the fastest growing killers in the United States; it is the leading cause of death for women aged 40 to 44. The statistics are staggering (see "The Numbers," p. 4). Incidences of breast cancer are up 53 percent since 1950. Today, one in nine women will get the disease in their lifetime (versus one in fourteen in 1960). Although breast cancer accounts for 32 percent of cancers in women and 16 percent of all cancers, it has received proportionately. much less funding and attention than other cancers and diseases.
