At least 16 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier are killed in the worst day of violence since Israel launched incursions into the Gaza strip in pursuit of a kidnapped soldier. The deaths came as Israeli troops moved into more densely populated areas of northern Gaza after earlier taking over a swathe of land on which three settlements used to stand. The army said the aim of the incursion was to prevent the firing of locally made Qassam rockets at Israel after the southern city of Ashkelon was hit for the first time earlier this week.
