Someone once wittily said of the historian Hugh Trevor-Roper that 'his reputation grew with every book he didn't write'. Well, this is one of the few books he DID write, although he never really intended these letters to be turned into a book.
Trevor-Roper first met the wily old American art historian Bernard Berenson in 1947, when Berenson was 82 and Trevor-Roper 33.
