Jul. 16--The drone of a fleeting Amtrak train reverberated off the hardwood floors and brick walls of Jerry Herring's Lakeland office.

It's not an annoyance for the commercial Realtor -- he said it's just a part of being downtown.

"Train? What train," he said with a chuckle. "You get used to it. I don't think it would be a true downtown if you didn't have a train."

From his second floor office on Kentucky Avenue, Herring, 59, can see the locomotive racing past Munn Park. While the railroad was a major reason for the creation of downtown Lakeland, Jerry Herring is a major force in its future.
