After a particularly difficult scene on the Texas set of ``Midnight Cowboy'' in 1969, director John Schlesinger appeared emotionally distraught. Actor Jon Voight walked to the celebrated filmmaker and asked what was wrong.
``Are we mad?'' the director said, shaking his head as he looked into Voight's eyes. ``What will they think of us? Look at what we're making. We're making a film about a dishwasher who goes to New York to sleep with a lot of women. Who is going to want to see this film?''
