The popularity in the US of baking soda toothpastes may be cannibalising sales of regular toothpastes, according to press reports. Dollar sales in the baking soda category grew by 66 per cent in supermarkets, drugstores and mass market outlets in the three month period ended October 31 last year, while sales of toothpastes overall (including baking soda varieties) rose only three per cent during the same period.
